Knee instability is defined as instability of the knee when there is play
between the femur and the tibia
either in the antero-posterior plane in the case of injury to one or both cruciate ligaments, or in the medial-lateral plane in the case of injury to the peripheral ligaments. For more information, see “Ligament pathologies“.
